AIMA: 55% of Global Hedge Funds Hold Crypto Assets in 2025

More than half of global hedge funds now have exposure to the cryptocurrency market, reflecting growing institutional interest in digital assets, according to a report published Thursday by the Alternative Investment Management Association (AIMA) and PwC.

The survey, conducted in the first half of 2025 among 122 investors and fund managers, found that 55% of funds hold crypto assets, up from 47% in 2024. On average, funds allocate about 7% of their portfolios to cryptocurrencies, although more than half invest less than 2%.

The report notes that U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration’s support for digital assets has helped drive cryptocurrency prices higher, with Bitcoin reaching new record highs in 2025.

AIMA said that 67% of funds exposed to crypto use derivatives to speculate on price movements without holding the underlying assets. However, the organization warned about market risks, citing an October 2025 flash crash linked to excessive leverage.

The surveyed funds collectively manage around $982 billion in assets, the report added.
