Bhutan Launches National Crypto Payment System for Tourists

Bhutan is making a significant step toward blockchain adoption by launching a cryptocurrency payment system exclusively for tourists. In partnership with Binance Pay and DK Bank, the authorities have created the world’s first national-level crypto tourism payment network. Visitors can now pay using crypto for a wide range of services—from visa fees and flights to local market purchases.

Using the Binance app, tourists can scan QR codes to make payments in over 100 cryptocurrencies. Transactions are processed instantly and automatically converted into the local currency, eliminating crypto volatility risks for local merchants.

This initiative brings a dual impact: it modernizes Bhutan’s payment infrastructure and opens up new business opportunities for small local vendors who previously lacked digital payment options. The system also offers a fully cashless experience for crypto-savvy tourists visiting a country known for its strict financial controls and limited access.

The project positions Bhutan as a global example of how to integrate cryptocurrency into the real economy in a regulated, inclusive, and innovation-driven manner—aligning with worldwide trends in digital tourism transformation.
